First let me introduce myself, I am a Registered Nurse with more than 20
years experience with Newborns and NICU preemies. It has been a personal
goal (for several years) to become an IBCLC, and this is the year that I
plan to take the exam. Only upon making this decision, and starting my
active studying towards this goal, have I realized how little those 20+
years of experience have given me in caring for mothers with babies
outside of my small window. I have been grateful for the knowledge that
flows daily on this site, and feel that it has been a great learning tool,
and stimulator of a desire to read and know more.

Now for my questions, with permission to post. I have recently learned of
two women who were breast pumping, one for a set of 30 week preemie twins,
and one a nurse that had returned back to working 12 hour night shifts,
where when they complained that they were having trouble with their milk
supply their OB gave them each a birthcontrol prescription for Nor QD .
He told them that it was a method of bc that improved your milk supply.
Both of these women lost even more of their supply after this, and
eventually stopped pumping all together. Has anyone else had any
experience with this med? Why would this progesterone only pill be a
useful galactogogue? I know that after speaking with both mothers, and
praising them for their efforts to give their babies milk, that their
probable downfall was not pumping frequently enough to stimulate and
remove, not a malfunction in their production, that caused their low
supply. Neither were open to the idea of relactating at this point.

Thanks again for all of your wisdom that you are so willing to share.
