I have permission to write in to help out a mom I saw today. Mother has
been exclusively pumping and her nipples are sery sore and covered with
white exudate. She is able to scrub it off,but it comes back. Infant
has not latched on and is five months old. High palate and short
tongue. I am not able to see a posterior tongue -tie. As far as I can
tell it is a short tongue. Ths mother has seen five other lactation
consultants when infant was younger.
Mother is able to pump 7 ounces at a pumping and infant has no symptoms
of a yeast infection. If this was yeast on her nipples would the infant
have yeast from the milk?
Mother says she has tried Dr. Newman's nipple ointment in the past and
it didn't help. She was washing it off before pumping. I suggested
trying it again after washing her nipples after puming with a mild baby
wash. Could she be getting a callous from pumping so much? I am at a
loss.
Infant can't suck well on first years Breastflow bottle either. He is
almost 22 pounds at 5 months. Birth weight was 9 pounds 9 oz. He is
teething now and bites down on anything put near his mouth. He was born
by cesarean so I did suggest cranial -sacral therapy.
This mother would love to be able to stop pumping and feed her baby by
the breast. Is it too late to get him back to the breast?
Please give me your feed back. Especially about the sore nipples. She
uses 36mm Flanges and pumps every four hours.
