Dear Jack,
You are right, the pause does mean something. I’ve  always thought it was
the period of time when the baby’s tongue undulates across the areola,
“milking” the sinuses. As a mother (26 and 28 years out) and OB nurse I’ve
only  observed  the lactation process for a total of  about 7 years,  just
the last  2 with special attention to the physiology of it all.  I have not
been fortunate enough to attend any of your conferences yet, but must agree
that any time I’ve observed the style of nursing you describe, problems
with milk intake and supply don’t usually develope. Thanks again for the
info on breast compression, have used it successfully 3 times since
receiving your handout, works really well for sleepy baby’s that need to
feel the milk in their mouth to keep suckling.
