Hello LACTNETTER,
This mom asked me to share her story with everyone on LACTNET. Can anyone
give me or her some ideas to help with her situation?
TIA for any information and your time.

Here is what she wrote me:

Hi, Yvette -

A couple of months ago, you wrote to me and asked if you could share my
breast symptoms with the others at Lacnet. I was wondering if you would
still consider doing this for me?

I have had two ultrasounds performed - both of which showed normal dilated
ducts consistent with pregnancy and lactation. The same doctor read my
ultrasounds both times. I have been examined by my OB/GYN (3 times), the
nurse practitioner, my family practitioner and a breast surgeon - all of
whom think that there is nothing wrong with me and that if the symptoms
persist they will re-evaluate me after I am done breastfeeding Emma. From
the 5th month of pregnancy to the present, I have had nipple and breast
pain in the left breast that feels somewhat like a plugged milk duct. The
nipple is pinkish and I can consistently squeeze white solid stuff from
three or four different openings on the nipple although milk does still
come out of those openings. It is quite painful to squeeze the nipple or
to have Emma nurse. I can feel something that feels like a little marble
in the nipple. The breast itself is warmer to the touch than! the right
breast (and has been since about 7 or 8 months of pregnancy), although
there are times when it doesn't feel any different than the right side. It
seems that the more I nurse Emma the warmer the breast feels and the more
the nipple hurts. The affected breast is also a little pinker in color.
Sometimes I have an itching sensation in the nipple area or on the rest of
the breast that goes up into the chest area. Sometimes I have tenderness
under in the armpit area too. There are days when the symptoms all seem to
flare up and other days when there is just nipple pain and slight warmth.

I have never been treated for either mastitis or a yeast infection
throughout the last 9 months. I do not want to wean Emma if I don't have
to, but it is starting to really concern me that the discomfort never goes
away. I feel like I need to try something to make things better. I have
considered weaning Emma from the left breast, but still nursing her on the
right side. Is that a possibility?

Yvette, thank you so much for listening to my story and for assisting me.
I am very frustrated by the whole situation. Please give me your thoughts
and any other information you come across. Thanks again :)
