When I took Tim to the dermatologist a couple of days ago, I had my "Core
Curriculum..." book along w/ me. The derm, a chatty sort -- older than me
(which makes him just slightly younger than God) -- wanted to know what I was
reading -- and when I told him I was an LC (why is it you then find out all
about everyone's breastfeeding issues??) he proudly reported that his wife
had breastfed all three of their kids - I'm thinking he's probably 62 ish,
which means his kids are now in their 30s or thereabouts -- (one of his sons
is MY dermatologist). Anyway, he said that she had to give it up with the
third one sooner than she wanted to because he had been given a really,
really good vacation that they couldn't pass up. She was very sad about it
-- but hey, it was a really really GOOD vacation. Of course the fact that
his wife breastfed at all in the dark 60's is amazing, but I did feel so
sorry for that baby and that mom. No vacation is as good as breastfeeding
until you are BOTH ready to wean.

On another note, I work for a group of pediatricians -- there are 7 in the
group -- 4 women, 3 men. I just met the newest addition to the group who
told me she is breastfeeding her 6 month old. That means that of the 4
female peds, 3 are currently nursing moms! The other one nursed her son for
over a year, but isn't nursing now -- he's 6 or 7. :>) And of course, we
have a couple of RNs on the staff who are nursing moms too. What a great
bunch!
