Our hospital currently keeps the babies with their moms as LDR's. We try
to encourage family members to bathe the baby with the help of the nurse
or nurse's aide or volunteer.
We usually end up transfering the couplet to the mother/baby unit
because of a lack of enough LDR's. Hopefully in the near future the room
situation will improve.
We also have policy that c/s moms can keep their baby in the OB recovery
room, however, due to staffing issues these c/s moms may have to go to
the gyn recovery area instead, so they don't get to keep their baby in
there unless we can work it out where a gyn recovery pt won't be in
there at the same time. But , we are trying to keep all c/s moms in the
OB area only ,with her baby, having a warmer available if mom is not
feeling well and for the bath time. We sometimes keep the baby with her
until she is ready to transfer to the mother/baby unit but encourage the
dad to accompany baby to nursery where he bathes baby then he takes baby
to mom in her postpartum room to stay. No matter how the "recovery
stage" goes, we encourage the family to stay with baby in the nursery if
he must be taken there. This seems to make them somewhat happier about
baby having to leave mom.
