Hi, Lucy: I was at the WALC conference also and the material you are
referring to was in one of Tina Smilies's lectures. She did NOT say that
we shouldn't be using these methods of feeding. I understood her to say
that bottles with nipples is another valid tool. I also happen to believe
that, as do may OTs (yes, even those who are staunch supporters of
breastfeeding). I don't believe any feeding option should be discarded
because of the LCs personal beliefs regarding its use. A bottle with a
nipple is ALWAYS a valid feeding option and one that should be made
available to the mother when helping her to make an alternative feeding
choice. My style of practice is to educate the mother on all the feeding
options open to her, discussing with her the pros and cons of each method
and finally recommending a feeding choice(s) that I feel she/baby might be
most successful at based on my assessment of the breastfeeding and the
realities of her situation. And if Plan A doesn't work, there is always
Plan B.
I would suggest contacting Tina - she posts fairly regularly on Lactnet -
and ask for clarification.
