Leah,
I would caution you to look more carefully at the studies, how they were
done, and what their definition of breastfeeding is or was. Sometimes they
aren't really comparing "apples to apples" - i.e. is breastfeeding once or
twice a day going to give the same results as a baby getting nothing but
breastmilk. Also, who paid the people doing the studies. A good researcher
can get results to prove or disprove what ever he/she wants. It's all in
how you set up the study and how you interpret it. That's why it is so hard
to compare results and why you see so many variations in results.
As a former nutritionist I looked at the ingredients of breastmilk and saw
many things that arent in formulas - IgA, IgG cystine, taurine. DHA, AAA,
cholosterol etc. etc. If you believe the old adage "You are What you Eat!"
Then it only stands to reason that babies getting exclusive breastmilk will
be healthier and smarter as they are getting a superior nutritional food
with many ingredients designed to promote brain growth and development.
Biologically the thing that makes humans different in the mammal kingdom is
the size of our brain, so it stands to reason that "mother nature" would
make the human infants food rich in nutrients to promote brain growth.
