We are not suppose to give formula to breastfed babies without a Doc's order.
Does it happen, of course. I don't get an order if I need to feed a baby
and I have been unsuccessful at collecting mom's milk. I tell the Mom this
is only temporary and I use small amounts. I don't hand a 3 oz bottle to the
parents and walk away like some of the nurses do. (which we are trying to
change, use a gradufeed and had it to the parent with some education!) I
hate using formula but I am not going to let a baby who is not feeding go
without some sort of nutrition. I have seen babies 24 hours old or older
that I am doubtful they ever transferred at the breast. I have had to firmly
look into a mother's eyes and say "your baby is NOT nursing". If I can't get
them on and she isn't successful with pumping or won't let me help her
manually express then formula is used. I have never heard of a Mom suing
over formula use. There have been some unhappy parents but it has always
been smoothed out. (and they should have been unhappy with the stuff that
goes on sometimes) At least not in our area. South Florida is a lawsuit
happy place, but I have never heard of this. Not even with all of the
unnecessary c-sections that go on.
