1)

For several years I have been involved with a program to get junior high
(middle school) girls interested in careers in math and science. Each year
I have highlighted lactation consultancy, with the additional agenda of
exposing them to the concept of breastfeeding. One year I brought boxes of
lab coats (thanks, immunology grad students, for the loan!) and some baby
dolls and did a role play with the girls. Half were LC's and half were
moms; then they switched. At the beginning of the class I also conducted a
survey of their knowledge and attitudes (which is in my files somewhere),
and at the end I showed a video of researchers (male and female) in a
laboratory setting.

The next year I got back some seminar evaluation forms; I summarize them
here for your interest:

The most interesting part of the presentation was:

the survey
the whole thing
being an intern and having cards that had problems on them and we would solve it
being a mother that had a pink baby
all
learning about feeding babies; video; interviews
the part where you asked questions
the activity
interviews
survey, pretending to be a mother
being a mother
the beginning and middle
when she talked about breastfeeding
the kids can't be allergic to the milk

The least interesting part of the presentation was:

the film
nothing (5 responses)
the movie
walking around in a white suit
boring talks
the movie
the video
10:05 - 10:10, the video
the questions she asked

After listening to this presentation, what question do you want to ask the
presenter?

How many mothers breastfeed?
Does she enjoy her job and what she has done?
When I have a kid, will you help me decide how to hold it, feed it, etc.?
How long she has been doing this
Why did you choose this job?
How do you make breastmilk?
I think I learned enough.
How many people breastfeed?
What if someone has a question but no one knows the answer?

All respondents were aged 11-13 years.

2) I am going nomail on Lactnet for awhile--I just can't keep up right now.
I will be available for e-mail through my address: [log in to unmask]
