Hi Jaye,

Working at a hospital with a level 3 NICU, I've seen a number of babies with this diagnosis. In fact, we are transporting one out from NICN right now who needs surgery immediately. Depending on the severity of the defect, often these babies can be poor feeders. The baby may turn blue during feeds and crying is especially stressful for them. They usually perform surgical repair around 3 months, I believe, if it doesn't need to be done immediately. Even with Level 3 NICU's such as ours, these babies go to a pediatric cardiac hospital if they need repair immediately. Establishing/maintaining the mom's milk supply is especially important as the baby may not suck efficiently (or at all). I've used a supply line at breast with good results if the baby is stable enough to breastfeed.
