Kathleen, as I understand your post, it sounds as though mentioning a brand
name is not *forbidden* but certainly discouraged if the generic will
suffice.

If the generic does not suffice--i.e., the writer needs to specify the
brand in order to have a specific discussion, then it seems that the writer
must be willing to accept complete responsibility for any negative remarks
about a particular product.

Right?
