I haven't yet read the full article, but I wanted to add an observation on
author Richard Schanler, MD. Not everyone on Lactnet may realize that he is
a U.S. pediatrician/neonatologist with a long history of research into the
use of breastmilk for premature infants. He has been a dedicated supporter
of breastfeeding. If you look at the American Academy of Pediatrics
statements on "Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk" from December 1997
and February 2005, you will see that he was part of the work group that
developed both of these position papers. In other writings he has
emphasized the nutritional, host defense, gastrointestinal and
neurodevelopmental benefits of breastmilk for premature infants, as well as
importance of skin-to-skin care and supporting the mother's milk supply.
Here is a sentence from his article, "The Use of Human Milk and
Breastfeeding in Premature Infants," Clinics in Perinatology: Clinical
Aspects of Human Milk and Lactation, Volume 26, number 22, June 1999, pages
379-398 (written with Nancy M. Hurst, RN, MSN and Chantal Lau, PhD): "Bottle
feeding does not reproduce to the same extent the tactile, olfactory, and
visual stimulation experienced by the infant or the sensory, physiologic,
and psychologic stimuli experienced by the mother during breastfeeding."
(page 389). So we should keep in mind that he is not setting out to
undermine breastfeeding.
