This came from K Auerbach, who asked me to post it, as she is still unavailable:

TITLE: News about PROZAC.

Margot Mann met a psychiatrist who is familiar with a (yet) unpublished
study of breastfeeding women with symptoms of depression and their
experiences with PROZAC. According to the person she spoke with, 5000
women were involved in the study. No side-effects in the babies were found,
although it is unclear whether the babies were all exclusively or only
partially breastfeeding.

According to the psychiatrist, PROZAC is in the class of SSRI drugs
(meaning Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). These drugs are
"selective" insofar as they bind selectively to serotonin transporters.

The drug is taken/prescribed for once/day use. It peaks in maternal serum 5
hours after ingestion and in the mother's milk by 6 hours post ingestion.
Recommended dose time is to take when the baby sleeps longest, usually at
night. Pateints can continue to breastfeed for 3 hours after taking the
SSRI. This individual discourages breastfeeding when the drug peaks in the
milk. This might result in a 6-hour period of breastfeeding abstinence each
day. It could entail littel or no itnerruption of breastfeeding. The
psychiatrist in question (who used to work for the US govt) pointed out
that PROZAC leads to non-depressed mothers who stay well and can bond
appropriately with their babies.

Use this information with Margot Mann's blessing. She gave me permission to
post it on LACTNET for all to see and assess as they choose.
