well, now don't get thinking denver is just a hotbed of radical change, but my
dh had placed the spotlight (once known as "women's section") section of the
rocky mountain news prominently on the table this morning to greet me. cheered
me right up to see a full page cover photo of a sister nursing a baby, title:
a break for breast feeding, with bill encouraging it, will employers follow
suit?

the article inside is called baby food for thought, and is a full page article
about breastfeeding and working, and it is wonderful, terrific, not a negative
or incorrect thing that i can find (which is a big improvement on the vital
touch book, okay, a later, separate rant). there are extensive quotes from dr.
marianne neifert ("dr. mom") and our own elizabeth baldwin, and there is even
a clarifying quote from dr. neifert that you don't need six hours a day to
breastfeed throughout the entire first year of a baby's life.

rachel biederman, communications manager for boston chicken (fast food
restaurant chain) is also quoted as saying that "even small restaurants can do
it (encourage employees to pump) if that's their priority. i spoke to several
managers in the pennsylvania region, and they all said the same thing: if an
hourly worker came to them and said she needed to pump breast milk, they'd
give her access to the office so she could."

several of the benefits of breastfeeding are mentioned. a women is mentioned
who intends to continue pumping at work until her child is two.

this article is not, unfortunately, going to be available on their website.
the editor told me they usually don't get their articles included, because men
make the decision as to what to publish and that means news and sports. (i
would swear this was news, myself.)

i've gone on too long but it is so wonderful to read something good! and if
you really gotta have it, let me know. my friend's new computer is hooked up,
and she really needs to know how to work that scanner. or i can snail mail
copies etc. or you can email the rocky mountain news and demand it at

kidnap
