Kathleen reminded us:
"Free formula is not free. It is paid for by the families in the world who
pay exorbitant prices, including those who cannot afford it. The good guys
are not as good as you think. Formula companies pay money for exposure of
their product, and this includes the AAP taking money from them.
There is no "free lunch." but alas, this has been discussed before on
Lactnet, ...see archives. Thanks!"

I think that must be my post she was referring to where I said parents are
given "free" formula in the hospital....yes, I know it's not really "free"
but to the hospital it is. Therein lies the attraction for hospitals to
maintain their "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" relationship with
Formula Co's. On another listserve I'm on there has been mention by RN's
that their hospital checked into going "Baby Friendly" but when they found
out how much formula would cost the hospital when they had to buy it
themselves they opted out of that idea. That's what I meant by "free"......
we know that but unfortunately the folks who do pay for it don't know it and
the people who don't pay for it don't care.
