There has been speculation about the exact component in cabbage that
reduces swelling, but our guesses are theoretical - no one knows for
sure.  I just tell people it's a magic property and leave it at that.
Someday, some company will fund a multi-million dollar study to find out
what it is so they can put it in a cream and make it a prescription
drug.
