Diana,
Have the reporter contact the International Academy of Compounding
Pharmacists. Their website is www.iacprx.org When Kay Hoover and I were
updating The Breastfeeding Atlas, we wanted to make sure what we wrote about
the US accessibility of domperidone was legal and accurate (see our
discussion on pg 67-68.) I called this organization and got a real insight.
These people reminded me of the medieval concept of Guilds. The man I spoke
with told me that a compounded can mix up drugs because basically he is the
expert on doing so. For instance, say a woman needs a paste of wild Mexican
yam to smear on her breasts to treat sx of menopause. A compounded can do
that. Say a baby needs a form of pain killer that isn't sold commercially.
So long as a doctor prescribes it, a compounded can mix it up. They are
rather jealous about that prerogative. Apparantly there is some master list
of drugs that is kept by the govt. They "enroll" new drugs on this list all
the time, and also list drugs which can be mixed up by compounders. MDs can
petitition to have drugs not currently on the list added. Again, this was
the substance of the info I got when updating the Atlas. It could have
changed, and if you discover something different, please share.
