I often ask mothers if they eat according to the clock. If they are
hungry, do they look at the clock and say "Oh I ate at 12:00 and it's
only 2:15 so I'll go hungry for another 45 minutes and eat at 3:00"? No
- we go to the cupboard or fridge and grab a quick bite or two. And
that's exactly what our babies are doing and they don't care that the
clock says it's only 2 hours since they last ate; they're hungry and
unlike us, they can't just get something for themselves. They have to
rely on us to meet that need when it's expressed not when the clock says
it's time. I've had several mothers grasp the idea when it's put that way.
