Greetings from Sunny Florida.
I thought I would post something that runs along the issues of the Brockton
man with a bottle. Several weeks ago it was Patient Education Week, I am on
our hospital committee and we decided on several things to celebrate among which
was a poster contest open to all of the hospital. Well Maternal Infant
decided we would redisplay our World Breastfeeding Week posters. We entered two of
the several we had and included one from our Childbirth Program as well.
There were two others one from Employee Health on Influenza vaccine and one from
Cardiac Rehab on Hypertension. (Kinda of sad only 5 from who hospital and 3
from us.) They were displayed in the cafeteria for a week and everyone could
vote on them. Well our really interesting one of cultural aspects of
breastfeeding won first place and the Childbirth Ed won 3rd. Prizes were goregous fruit
baskets....(hey we have no money). Now the interesting issue....we put them
on display outside the waiting areas in Labor and Delivery....we were told
they were offensive due to the sight of women's breasts and some of the historic
paintings. We were told we had to move them to a less noticeable area. So we
moved them inside the doors across from our admitting office. One of the
people who thought they were offensive is our new nurse manager. She also finds
the Medela posters of nursing moms less than discreet. We told her that Plant
Mangement had okayed them and want the Medela posters up. You would think
that she would be happy to promote the cultural diversity since its our nursing
model and also we have a real cultural issue....She didn't come from Florida,
but from up North.
Our taskforce is really committed to getting the concept of breastfeeding is
NORMAL into our patient community mindset.....but when a few of the staff docs
who are Latin and one RN and the manager think that posters and handouts are
offensive it boggles our imagination. PS Our LC entered the pumpkin carving
contest and won first prize....she made a Mommy pumpkin breast feeding a baby
pumpkin (very discreetly, but still you could tell what she was up to).
Keep the Christmas ideas coming because we might want to "ring their bells"
with a novel Christmas theme...
Lovingly,
Leanne Jewell, RN, C, IBCLC-RLC, LCCE, FACCE
