The report is embargoed until next week, but after that I will be able to
share the results of a systematic review of studies about the above topics.
I was part of an expert group appointed by our national center for
evidence-based practice to examine what, if any, relationships exist between
pacifier use and breastfeeding, co-sleeping and breastfeeding, pacifier use
and SIDS, and co-sleeping and SIDS, AND whether breastfeeding affects risk
of SIDS.
Pretty comprehensive, and complicated set of questions.

Even before the embargo is lifted I can tell you that we found ONE thing
that ran through all the studies, and that is that smoking is a Really Bad
Idea, especially for parents of young children.

Of course, that wasn't one of the things we were asked to look at. But it
comes up every single time anyone looks at SIDS. The group included a
forensic pathologist internationally known for his work with SIDS, and a
pediatrician who also has worked extensively in SIDS research. And two of
us in the group were IBCLCs, and four were midwives, and the other IBCLC is
a fabulous PHN - so the group was very diverse, and yet we did manage to
write a report which is a consensus of our understanding of the current
evidence.

Anyway, watch this space and you all should be among the very very first
people on earth to see a summary of our conclusions, in English.
