It is good for me to read posts like the Chicago Tribune article posted
today by Alexis M. Neely. We have it pretty good.
In Norway, a.k.a. BF Heaven, women are first guaranteed the right to about
one year of full time leave after having a baby, and still come back to the
same job. On returning, they have the legal right to reduce their work time
by up to one hour each day to provide milk for their child. How this is
worked out is up to the woman and her employer, with the woman's needs
placed before the employer's.
Employees in the public sector, which includes virtually all teachers,
health workers, and many others, have the right to two hours off WITH PAY
for this purpose, through our excellent contract.
Neither the law nor the contract contains any mention of an age limit for
the child receiving the milk. Probably an oversight, but one we intend to
fight tooth and nail to maintain.
The idea of a woman being punished for pumping on the job is just beyond my
grasp anymore. Been here too long!

The first time I met the head midwife on the post partum ward where I was
starting my preceptorship as a new grad, she couldn't shake my hand because
both of hers were occupied, holding a pump collection set and a breast. Her
own! No big deal, this is business as usual. The milk would be stored in
the fridge used by the staff for our own food. Again, no big deal.

Cheers and hooray for C. Maloney.
