Dear Friends:
I am working with a mother that had an unmedicated, fast (about 5 hour)
birth with her first baby, a son. The hospital they were in practices the
forced, scheduled latching techniques. He was circumcised before he went
home. The parents followed this practice for a week. Baby refuses to latch.
Now she is feeding on cue. She is pumping, has tons of milk, baby and
she love skin-to-skin.
Last night, we tried remedial co-bathing. I have never had a baby do
what this boy did. He basically froze and went into deep sleep from a quiet
alert state. He would not be aroused by anything. At first he was floating in
the bath, supported by her hands. Then he went to her chest. Still no
response from him, even while drizzling warm water over him. When she started
to get chilly, they got out.
He woke, was mad and wanted the breast. He worked for 1/2 hour; finally
some success with a newborn small nipple shield as he is used to and prefers
silicon to mom. Except that he won't open wide. However, that half-hour was
the first time he had ever demonstrated persistance to the latch. So they are
encouraged.
I am totally puzzled by his frozen reaction to the co-bathing. The bath
was warm, the room was dimly lit by the hall light, the environment was open,
as I present co-bathing only as another nice thing to do with a baby. Every
other baby I have worked with has stayed awake, and some have crawled to the
breast.
Any suggestions or ideas?
