Winnie,

I think you are correct, bf in public was never illegal in and of itself, but now it is specifically protected. Breastfeeding involves two people, one adult and one infant/very young child. When and where breastfeeding happens is about babies’ needs not their mothers’. So I agree this is about babies’ need to eat. And it is need not want, not spoiling/indulging the baby. Reframing the message is important.

Subject: nursing in public

Recent post stated: "Nursing in public is now legal in every US state. Idaho was last state to pass law!!! Finally. Yeah!!! " My question is, Was it ever actually illegal? In most cases I believe complaints against public breastfeeding was based on interpretation of indecency laws, not specific laws against it. We should be saying that the right of an infant to nurse undisturbed whenever and wherever the need arises is now protected. I also firmly wish we would put it terms of the right of the infant more than the right of the mother. Putting it that way takes the wind out of the sick argument that it's all about a woman wanting to"flip it out and expose herself".Winnie Mading, retired, but still advocating
