We do not routinely call every mom (although I wish we could). We
do call moms that haven't gotten a good start in the hospital. We
give them a day we will be calling before they leave. In addition,
moms who call us usually get our answering machine, so we are
calling those back. Because of HIPPA, when we don't reach the mom,
we can't say much more than the fact that we are returning her call
unless she has signed an "alternate communication form" in which she
can indicate whether it's OK to leave more info on a machine or with
whoever answers the call.
When we reach a machine, we will indicate we are returning her call
and when we will be trying again. We do the same a second time if
mom hasn't called us in the meantime. The third attempt if we don't
reach her we will add something like, "If you still have a concern,
please call us back. If there is another number where it would be
easier to reach you, please let us know."
The attempts to reach mom are noted in our records in case there is
any problem in the future with "abandoning" the mom. If there is a
real concern about the baby's health or if we have contacted her at
the request of the doc, we will also let the baby's doc know that we
have not been successful in reaching the mom.

Winnie
