I was born in the late 50's in a small maternity home deep in the New Forest in the South of England delivered by my mothers GP.
I was only just 5 1/2 pounds described as a "china doll" and because of restrictive feeding practices as described by Virginia I hadn't gained enough weight at 2 weeks-remember babies in that era were deemed healthy only if they had rolls of fat around every limb and trunk. So at 2 weeks old at the reccomendation of the GP I was transferred onto National Dried formula, available free from the "Welfare". At 6 weeks I still wasn't fat enough so again on GP's recomendation Farleys rusk was dissolved in my bottle 3 times a day to build me up-well it worked and I carry the legacy forever.
My mother was also told her milk was weak so when my robust brother was born 2 years later weighing 8 lbs she was told he was too big for her to maintain feeding-she couldn't win poor thing!
Througout my childhood I also had from the "Welfare" cod liver oil and sweetened orange juice and once at school 1/3 pint of full cream milk every day.
