Rachel,
After having seen thousands of clients in my practice, I'm wondering if
perhaps this mom you've been helping has not followed up with the LCs (rather
than them not having followed up with her). In that they (one or both LCs)
may have made attempts to contact her, may have left messages on her
answering machine or with her family, and she hasn't returned that contact.
Or the mom has been "provider hopping", going from one provider to another
with no intention of following up with any of them. I've seen these things
happen quite often. Have you been in contact with the LCs? Perhaps that
would be a way to assure continuity of care for this mom. You could act as
an impetus for the mom to seek out that follow-up care, or give the LCs
information that could further their care of the mom and baby.

I strongly believe that lay breastfeeding counselors (LLL, NMAA, etc.) and
professional LCs should, and do, work together in the care of the mother-baby
dyad. We've all seen how information can be distorted and misconstrued in
the postpartum period, through sleep deprivation, physical and emotional
exhaustion, etc. Keeping the lines open between care providers of all types
is necessary to the success of breastfeeding and the profession of lactation.

Thank you for being there for this mom. Keep us informed about the progress.
