Last year, I had a mom of twins who had had reduction surgery. She was able
to exclusively breastfeed for about 5 months when she started one supplement
bottle per day of formula. We did regular wt. checks and she drink mother's
milk tea each time she nursed the boys. At about 3 months, she became
concerned that her supply might be dropping. I sent her home with Baby Weight
Scale to do 24hr of test weighs, it revealed they were getting 48 oz in 24 hr.
I never discourage a mom from TRYING after reduction surgery, I treat like
any other mom, make sure the latch and positioning is good and monitor the
baby for wt. gain. I do inform mom of all possibilities and recommend
frequent wt. checks and assessments. I've worked with some who could only
produce 30%-50% of baby's intake. These moms I suggest an SNS to.

Warmly,
Pat Lindsey, IBCLC near Orlando, FL
