I have followed this thread with interest, and I think that we DO need to tell the truth about the risks of artificial feeding; mothers need to be respected enough to be given the ability to make a fully informed decision and we are likely to be the only ones to give her the information she needs to do so in many cases.
The issue is in how they are given the information; I have had so many discussions with women about the facts of infant feeding choices, and the way I have dealt with the guilt issue is to also talk about the socio-cultural forces at work; I talk about the pressures they may be facing in a bottle feeding culture, and the commercial pressures at work in so many of our parenting choices, and the fact that the normal way to feed babies has become abnormal in the eyes of our society.... I DO see breastfeeding as a health behavior, but more importantly as a cultural as well as socio-emotional behavior. If we address both aspects I think we are more likely to be heard by those we work with.
