Hi everyone
Have a tricky case here which I would like some input on. A friend of
mine had a baby 4 weeks ago - forceps delivery after failed vacuum.
First week baby was an 'angel' slept and fed. After that, he has
become increasingly unhappy. He is very grumpy in between feeds -
dozes, then wakes and appears to be in pain - arches, screams,
eventually settles, dozes etc etc. At the breast he feeds well for a
few minutes then arches, struggles, cries, comes off, goes back on.
He is gaining weight well - 5kg (10.5 lb) at 3.5 weeks - birth wt
about 7lb 14oz. Pees and poos normall for bf baby. Feeds every 2-3
hours, one breast per feed.
Mother has tried many settling techniques, treatment for reflux (via
her doctor - I'm her friend!!), and has been strictly dairy-free for
a week. Baby is unchanged. He is worse in the evening from
7pm-midnight, more settled midnight to 5 or 6am, and pretty awful the
rest of the day. He doesn't seem to have any birth trauma (broken
bones, sore neck etc).
I have a feeling that this is a little bub who
is 'high need' and has colic (whatever that is). Of course, your
friend's babies are always the worst, and hardest to help!!!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Fiona
