I agree that in these cases the medical professionals in charge dropped the
ball

14+ years ago a noted neonatologist -- discharged my oldest (34 weeker) on
day 3 with a bili of 15 and rising -- it was noted in her chart that she was
A postive and I was O positive (can we say ABO) -- i had 3 attempts at
inducing labor with large amounts of pitocin -- before my C section -- had to
wait an extra 2 hours for the test and was told everything was fine

-- well 2 days later -- my daughter was a carrot and very lethargic -- many
trips to a local hospital over the holiday weekend -- and her projectile
vomiting the forced formula every 2 hours -- until i could get a "REAL" pump
and get my milk to come in (once she got moms best she stopped vomiting and
the low and behold the bili came down anyway -- never told the pedi that i
went against orders and fed my own milk (instead of making her sick with
formula) -- this scared the devil out of my medication doped out mind. and my
husband.

-- things did turn out well -- we were, my local LLL leaders very first
phone call (baptisim by fire if you ask me) & home visit as a active leader
-- god bless her heart -- we lived less than a mile apart -- she came to my
house with her own young daughter playing on my family room floor -- taught
us how to nurse with a SNS -- and even though it took over six weeks (2 weeks
past her due date) to be fully on the breast (despite the severe tounge tie
that no one saw as a problem -- she nursed for over 2.5 years .

-- as a side note it was over 4 + years before she could tolerate any kind of
cows milk products -- the first foods given to a baby can really make a life
long difference.

-- all of this was before i ever dreamed of becoming a IBCLC -- it became one
of my missions in life -- to bridge the huge information gap between the real
world and the majority of health care professional. (by the by i just did my
10 year recert and did very well -- since i barely had time to study -- i am
working on my doctorate in pharmacy also.

-- This jaundice thing -- is really is a very sore nerve -- you never forget
you birth stories -- horrors as well as great moments

-- like when my youngest did not want to nurse right after my second c
section delivery -- but held on to my baby finger so tight that they had to
pry her little fingers open to move me to my room -- then a short while later
-- was brought to me after i had a fit -- nursed for almost ten minutes --
let out a BIG burp and promptly fell asleep at my breast -- when the helpful
nurse tried to put her in her "OWN" bed -- I must of growled real loud
because she backed off -- my dear husband said i was a bit hard on her (I did
not think so -- she was MY baby -- stay away.)

-- the upside of this was that baby #2 nursed so well from the very start --
got a little yellow and the NEW neonatologist told the staff to back off &
don't bother taking a billi level -- this kid only nursed 6 or 7 times a day
and gained 2.5 ounces per day each day from day 2 though 6 weeks of age --
this one never looked back and also nursed for over 2.5 years.

-- daughter #1 taught me patience-guidence and to push on -- and daughter #2
taught me how it was supposed to be.

-- so when ever i get depressed about my practice slowing down or the doctors
who just DO NOT get it -- i know my calling is on the right track

Sorry that this is SO LONG
