Funny thing.... A woman came to my breastfeeding group today, second time
mom and in the course of talking about feeding issues, mentioned that her
first child, a boy, did not eat one single thing besides breastmilk til he was 2
years old. They offered him everything and took him to every specialist
imaginable. Nothing was ever turned up and one day when she was in a
gourmet supermarket with him, he started getting agitated, insisting that she
buy him bread and ice cream. From that day on he ate and now at 4 years
old,he is an active, outgoing kid, who will eat a huge variety of things
including anchovies and pickles!!!It reminded me of another story a friend of
mine told about her little brother who didn't speak or even babble until he was
three years old and then one night at dinner said "Pass the salt"... I am not
writing this to discourage these parents from investigating what might be a
serious issue, but you might also might want to mention that there are kids
who are just not ready for solids until they are ready. I have no explanation
for why the switch was flipped with this baby but it was and now he is a good
eater. She says that he still needs to be reminded to eat, but that once they
put the food in front of him and encourage him to eat he is happy to comply. I
think that it is the prudent thing to make sure that there is no underlying
cause of this child's behavior and it is comforting as a parent to feel that you
are doing everything in your power to help your child, but that comfort can
also be mixed with intermittent alarm....and remembering that there are
outliers who are completely "normal" is important.
