Dear Listmates,

I searched the archives for information on newborn mastitis and did not get
any hits. From a google search, I did see an excellent picture of a male
infant with mastitis which was caused by his grandmother "squeezing out the bad
milk." The link for this is
_http://www.indianpediatrics.net/sept2000/sept-1021.htm_ (http://www.indianpediatrics.net/sept2000/sept-1021.htm)

I saw an almost three week old female today who was diagnosed by an ER doc
with bilateral mastitis on Monday and put Cephlexin. The mom told me the baby
did not have a fever, but she had swollen breasts, and she wanted a doctor to
see her. I do not know if blood work was done. When I saw the baby today,
the breasts looked like newborn breast hypertrophy that I have seen in many
babies. This baby was 40 weeks plus 4 days at birth. The baby's pedi did not
see her but was consulted by phone and concurred with the diagnosis
according to the office nurse I spoke with. I would like to know how common this
condition is and if it is usually treated with antibiotics. Thank you for your
imput.
