~~It
is really amazing that some of us survived on what we were fed as infants!
I suspect that the fact that most of our mothers were breastfed themselves,
and grew up before junk food was so prevalent, was at least one thing we had
in our favor, that helped keep us all from dying of malnutrition or
infections. ~~
well and of course my mother's entire generation would say, 'well you were
raised on formula and YOU were/are fine!' actually, my mother was the youngest
of 10 kids and had me at 15, so SHE was also raised on formula and she doesn't
hesitate to tell you she is fine... but when you delve into 'what exactly is
fine?' it is FAR from fine! the norm for me and my siblings and cousins as an
infant and toddler was constant ear infections, constant dependence on
antibiotics, continual diaper rashes even to the point of bleeding... seeing me w/out
a green mucusy nose was a rarity and i had tonsillitis throughout my childhood
resulting in a tonsillectomy. i also have always had a fairly large scar on
my situpon (there's a medical term to dazzle you all!) that my mother says was
an allergic reaction to an injection of penicillin given to me at 3 wks that
then became infected and abscessed and had to be lanced. when i ask anyone
from previous generations about the overall health of their babies back then,
these things were pretty standard. 'babies get colds/rashes/ear infections and
have bad reactions to shots/vaxes!' !' my own mom is constantly asking if my
boys haven't had an ear infection yet b/c 'you had them daily as a baby!' since
she also did, to her it is indisputably a genetic trait. @@. my own children
have never had one, never been on antibiotics, never even had a drop of my
generations's beloved children's tylenol or motrin. just when i think the pendulum
has finally swung the other way and ppl of my mom's generation MUST see bfing
makes healthier/happier babies, i hear we may be doing them a disservice in
preventing them from getting sick as often b/c they are not building any
resistance to germs. when my kids do finally get a cold, according to my
father-in-law, it is likely to just turn into pneumonia and land them in the hospital!
anyway, i suppose when my children are in college, i will have my final say on
the subject. b/c having bf'ed this long, i know their good health is going to
be a lifelong benefit and they are almost contractually bound to be geniuses
now, right? ;-)
ps - as for the pudding bottles, i was born at 6lbs and was 18 lbs at 4 mos.
both of my own exclusively bf'ed boys were not 18 lbs until 9 mos. it's a
miracle i have not ended up with real weight issues other than pgc/bfing related
ones. in my baby pics, i have rolls on my rolls! my mom used to put the
powdered pudding mix right in w/ the formula/cow's milk, enlarge the hole on the
nipple and then 'encourage' me to drink the whole bottle before it thickened too
much.
