It was asked what the purpose of certification program which do not
confer the IBCLC are.

Well, not everyone needs to see an IBCLC. It's sort of like having an
obstetrician for a normal pregnancy. I help out a lot of moms that are
just dealing with issues like minor latch problems, oversupply and too
much switching, questions about returning to work and pumping, providing
information sources about drug compatibility, sore nipples, atrocious
advice from PCPs that they ask me about because it doesn't sit right
with them. I give out a lot of just plain moral support that's hard for
an IBCLC to provide during her more limited time with the client.

I also think these programs are wonderful for ob and peds nurses. The
key is having a good understanding on what you can and can't cope with.
I have had a few moms that I was limited in my ability to help and I
referred them on to our LC. I wouldn't try to help a family with a
serious problem and these families are already working with the LC
anyway. To say that I would need to sit the exam to provide these
services is a little over the top. I don't think this is what was
exactly being said, but I just had to respond.

regards,
Beth
