In the hospital that I work at babies are routinely dressed in little paper (disposable) t shirts after skin to skin time. Skin to skin time is usually about an hour to hour and half after birth. This is hopefully after the infant has had a good first latch. Our emphasis is trying to get the staff to think of skin to skin time as almost continuous during the postpartum hospital stay as long as mother is awake. My thoughts are if we did away with the paper shirt and instead wrapped the baby in a warm blanket when baby is separated from mother, it might serve as a non verbal reminder to both staff and family that baby should be skin to skin. I am inquiring about other mother baby units. Do you use clothes on baby, and if so, when?

Thanks for your input as always!

Mary Westra RN, IBCLC
