Dear Jan
I have seen a mom aspirate during a c-section. Not a pretty sight. This
however was a repeat where the mom hadn't been in labor. At our hospital,
our moms are on "full Liquids with toast" for a diet order. I don't think
I have ever had a mom want more than that. If the mom is truly in labor
hard enough to "qualify " for a c-section, I feel that her body is going
to purge itself of anything in it's stomach during labor.
I also think that we can go overboard the other way and tell moms to be sure
and eat a good meal and drink lots of liquids. They feel they need
to do this even when their bodies tell them not to. I think that
this is where a mom might get into trouble by not listening to what
her body is telling her. We don't use IV's routinely either! I
really work at a great place, don't I!
