Amy,

I have found that the “best” thing to do for these babies is often the very
simplest. Uninterupted skin to skin contact will often turn a baby who
won’t into a baby who won’t stop nursing. At 9#2 this baby may not be very
hungry, just disoriented and trying hard to figure the world out.
Expressing a few drops into the babies mouth should be part of each practice
session and this will keep the blood sugar stable. The other thing that will
really help is if her milk transitions well and as soon as possible. Hand
expression and/or pumping each feeding session that doesn’t go well or every
couple of hours will keep her body on track and provide the needed feedback
for the infant as she starts to get more milk for her efforts.
