Elise Morse-Gagne asks whether I am prepared to defend one of the numbers in
my long post about choosing to bottle feed in a breastfeeding culture. It was
the number of years during which BF initiation rates in Norway have been
unchanged, at about 99%. This has been the case for nearly a century and a
half, and likely even longer, but good records were not kept before that.
There is a researcher who did her PhD on this and I am quoting her. I don't
think it will be necessary for me to sacrifice life or honor in defense of the
number, and I hope it won't be necessary for me to sacrifice my health in
order to keep it as high for the next several decades as well!
When we talk about it being a breastfeeding culture, we don't mean that women
here are following some recent fashion trend. What is really amazing is that
it took so little to break health professionals of the habit of supporting it,
and is taking so much to get us back on track.

While I am on the subject of Elise, I want to say how perfect her approach
sounds if one wants breastfeeding to be the default choice. Positively
inspiring - you'd almost think she'd lived in Norway in her formative years
:-)

chauvinistically yours,
Rachel Myr
