Hello, Sherene.
You ask if those who rent pumps couldn't just have a spare flange
available in the various sizes for moms who are going to rent. You said, "You
wouldn't need a sterile kit or anything..."
Well, actually, you *do* need a sterile kit. What if a mom comes in
with bloody nipples from a baby who has damaged her, and she tries a flange?
What if the mother who came in before her had something catchable? Or what if
the mother with the bloody nipples leaves something catchable for the next
woman? The rental station has to be ready to sterilize the kit pieces between
mothers, and not all are in a position to do that. The pump manufacturers sell
sterile kits to hospitals and instruct mothers to sterilize before first use
any kit purchased elsewhere. If we rental depots did not then sterilize the
pieces the mothers would use to try, when the manufacturers instruct that the
pieces be sterile, we would really be opening ourselves up to liability.
Also, for those of us in private practice, a mother could "try" the
pump in the relative privacy of our office or her home. But what about those
mothers who rent from the local pharmacy or a nearby hospital supply store?
Most of these places do not have any extra floor space to devote to closing off a
private area where the mother could try the pump.
While you have a nice idea, and some of us can actually offer that
service, it is unfortunately not really feasible in many instances.
