Jocelyn,

You might enjoy a perusal of the Couple to Couple League website,
ccli.org They have some fun facts on LAM and the Fertility Awareness
Method. For example, the chart in my OB's office lists the reliability
of FAM as something like 60-80%, but what they don't tell you is that
was from a poorly controlled study, and the same study got an
effectiveness of only 85% for the pill! On the other hand, they cite a
study of 1200 couples, all of whom had decided they were done having
children, which ideally made them less likely to "cheat" than those who
were just using LAM to space children. Their failure rate? ZERO.

Personally, I get mad when I think of all the years I spent on the pill,
having no idea that my body worked the way it does. In fact, an RN
actually told me that women are like rabbits--we can ovulate at any
time, without warning. I only learned otherwise when I started
pre-conception charting.

I've also been told many, many times, by all sorts of different people,
that breastfeeding is not an effective method of birth control.
Frankly, I think for many women it isn't, because they aren't willing to
feed frequently, feed at night, and wait for baby to indicate readiness
for solids.

Lynn in MO, finally fertile at 32 mo postpartum (way out there on the
bell curve!)
