Dear Esther,

This is so sad. Yesterday I heard that there was a report that a baby was found alive under a group of corpses - the newsman said that it was the subject of a great deal of discussion in Israel ( a miracle, of sorts) - how strange to learn that this baby is known to one that we know. I also read yesterday that one of those killed on the bus was an American woman with 13 children. One of her children was also killed. It just defies the imagination.

As to the mom, I would think that this would be similar to a mom healing from lanced abscesses. They do usually heal, although sometimes slowly. While it is true that there will continue to be small amounts of milk produced as long as the baby is nursing on the other side, the amount will be minimal and should be managable. It might be helpful if the surgeon were brought in as part of a team effort to help both mother and baby with a goal of the most optimal outcome, both physical and emotional, for both. I would think that continued breastfeeding would be the best way to achieve such a goal.

Our prayers are with you. Let us know how this turns out. Hang in there.

Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BSMT, ASCP, IBCLC
