Sounds like the baby having trouble feeding has some suck problems. We were
forturnate to have a speech pathalogist in the area talk to our LC group
several months ago. She was wonderful and taught us a lot. She has written
a book called Oral Motor Assessment and Treatment - Ages and Stages. She
also has a web page www.oral-motor.com which gives more infor about her and
her book. She stressed to us that a newborn having feeding problems will
likely go on to be a child having speech problems and taught us some simple
exerices to do. Sometimes a baby can be born without sucking pads and that
can compromise their ability to suck. Anyway, when our normal round of suck
training exercises don't help we have referred several moms and babies to
her and have always been pleased with the results. So I would reccomend
that you find a good speech pathologist in your area who is familiar with
treating infants. Diane might be able to put you in touch with someone. You
can E-mail her at [log in to unmask]
