I wanted to thank all of you who have posted recently on the subject of
tight frenulums.  A mother was referred to me by her Pediatrician for very
sore nipples and continued weight loss at one week despite a perceived
adequate supply. Infant nursed "all the time," had trouble latching and fell
asleep after only minutes at the breast. Since this Mom had nursed her first
baby she knew this wasn't right. After one look at this baby I knew what the
problem was. The mother said the Pediatrician was aware of the tight frenulum
and told her it did not affect nursing and he would not recommend clipping.
She pleaded with me to help her so I faxed an assessment to him stating the
physical findings and my opinion that this baby would be unable to nurse
effectively without a frenotomy. Three days later the Mom called me to report
that the Pediatrician called her after receiving my assessment and referred
her to an ENT specialist who did the procedure the next day. As she said, "Now
this is breastfeeding!"
