i have seen the same thing happen in the hospital; mom is set up with big
double pump set and gets a few drops of colostrum in the flange, or just
barely a bit in the collection bottles. nurse says "oh, that's not enough to
do anything with, just toss it" or, what appears to be the "more humane" -
"just rub it on your nipples." mother gets the message loud and clear that
her milk is not important. and we wonder why breastfeeding fails?

i like to use hand expression into a cup or onto a spoon, even, or (if
mother is not feeling up to hand expression or having me express) even using
the nipple everter (sorry, can't think of a generic way to say it) to get
those few precious drops. and gee, if there are some drops of colostrum on a
spoon or in the little feeding cup, you can just . . . give it to the baby!
without a nipple! what a thought.
