I wonder if she could try a pain reliever medication such as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory for next few days, taken as directed over the counter.  And supplement the baby his formula using a lactation aid at the breast. She might also add a probiotic. And pay careful attention to positioning and attachment not only at the beginning of a feeding but throughout, supporting baby and breast so there is no friction or pulling. If she can manage to hand express gently after some (or all) feeds, then she can increase her milk production.
