Years ago, I helped a friend nurse her adopted 8-month-old. She had
terrible nipple pain breastfeeding a baby who had bottle fed from birth.
Then that got better. As her milk came in, she had painful nipples again.
She said the pain was similar to her nipple pain during ovulation. Hmmm,
wonder why?
My physiology professor solved the puzzle for me last year when I asked him
what hormone is peaking when the milk comes in and when women ovulate.
Prolactin won the prize.
That would also explain why researchers found restricted feeding time merely
delayed peak soreness. Restricted breastfeeding delays when the milk comes
in.
A good latch is vital. I've taught proper latches to innocent bystanders.
I'm a Latch-Nut. But most of us are going to have tender nipples in the
first week. Prolactin gets my vote. Pam Easterday LLLL [log in to unmask]
