Dear Phyllis,
Congratulations! I was involved in starting a hospital based
program with 3 other nurses in 1997. How exciting!
First of all, you may want to encourage the staff to treat the B & B
babies like BREAST babies during the first week, anyway, so the first
attachments are at the breast. The babies should learn to breast feed
first. Perhaps go into the different methods of sucking, and how healthy
the jaw thrusting is......fewer overbites, fewer need braces, less
snoring, less sleep apnea, fewer cavities! How the baby should learn to
open widely first, place tongue out and cupping under the breast.....etc,
you know!!!
The nurses will notice that you are there to help them, the moms,
and the docs to get the moms off to a better start.
I work at an inner city hospital that is a big bottle-feeding
place......but small changes are taking place, baby steps at a time!
Most of our moms are sent home with 2 marketing packs, the M-Johnson and
R.
Someone recently said on Lactnet, remember we reach one mother at a
time! Maybe one nurse at a time, too!
I can send you copies of some of our forms, if you like, get in
touch with me via email. they may not be fantastic, but I feel really
do the job for us.
