Mary,
I've seen this several times...similar situations. A short course of a
diuretic was helpful, of course the mom's OB or HCP needs to be part of this. Is she
taking an anti-inflammatory drug as well? In one case the breast was so
swollen we ended up using the LARGEST nipple flange available because pumping made
her nipples swell even more. Once we got some milk flow it was a huge comfort.

I have also been using breast shells for a day or two to provide gentle
pressure to encourage leaking in some of these stubborn cases. Maybe cabbage for
longer periods of time, too? Watermelon is a natural diuretic, may be hard to
find or expensive in the winter but worth a try. Good luck..poor baby...poor
mom.
