Dear Wise Lact-people,
I have a mom who would like me to ask for your educated opinions on this:
Mom is breastfeeding and would like to return to work . She is an artist who
paints prosthetic hands, using volatile ( stinky) paints. She is wondering if
they will pass into her milk. She does wear gloves so I guess she is wondering
about respiratory transmission. According to BF Abstracts " Lactational
transfer of volatile chemicals in breast milk " by Fisher et.al., 19 volatile
occupational chemicals, were studied, and the results were that " only
perchloroethylene, bromochloroethane, and 1,4-dioxane exceeded the US
Environmental Protection Agency non-cancer drinking water ingestion rates for
children" My question, is does anyone have the complete article which was in
Am Indust Hyg Assoc J, and what it might say about transmission of her
acrylics, which I think is methyacrylate.( liquid acrylic), silicone flowable
sealant containing acetic acid, cyclohexane, xylene, powdered acrylics. In
other locations in the shop, there exist, but mom does not work with them, (
uses dust mask when working) trichlorethane, and xylene. Baby is now 2 months
old, and mom had not worked with any of these chemicals during pregnancy. Site
is well-ventilated. Mom is concerned about whether she should pump and feed
baby her EBM and not nurse for some time period during the day or after the
work is done. Anticipated one full day a week for the next few months.
Thanks in advance, please respond to AgentJaye@aolcom as well as the List,
